Serve More Customers With Inclusive Product Design

inclusive design

Consequently, all users will benefit because you will have designed to address a vast range of pain points. When you build inclusive products, you infuse them with a sense of belonging to a huge span of user groups . In the following chapter, we'll walk you through why designing for inclusivity is important and introduce you to eight inclusive design principles to help get you started.

Additional Inclusive Design Principles

What would vacations look like if transportation limited you from exploring freely? When inclusivity is disregarded, companies risk limiting and excluding groups of individuals for simply being themselves. No, but by including many different types of people, the reader can intuit the information applies to everyone.

Understanding user diversity

Inclusive design isn’t just the latest buzzword…The truth is, inclusivity and diversity are important to the average consumer. Remember, nearly two in three consumers said they were more likely to buy a product if the brand’s advertisements reflect inclusion. So, not only is inclusive design the right thing to do, it’s good for business. As a designer, it’s important for me to consider differences in people and how my choices may impact them based on those differences.

Inclusive Design in Practice: Examples and Case Studies

inclusive design

Microsoft's pyramid model presents a more realistic image of population diversity. As seen in the image below, many of us (37%) experience mild difficulties when interacting with digital products. Examples of mild difficulties and impairments include being slightly hard of hearing or having difficulty hearing conversation some, but not most, of the time. Physical traits can range from hearing, motor functions, vision, speech, and a person's overall physical build. Inclusive product experiences are driven by a deep understanding of user backgrounds and abilities.

Differentiation from accessible and universal design

As a community, we can remove discrimination against people with disabilities and protect their rights to be part of the society. By doing so, we will create access for all products and services that will delight everyone. By embracing inclusive design principles, brands can differentiate themselves from competitors and position themselves as leaders in accessibility and inclusivity. Inclusive design ensures that every person—regardless of their gender, location, native language and physical abilities—can enjoy and use products or services. There are numerous examples of inclusive design that apply to interfaces and technology, consumer products, and infrastructure.

End-to-End Solutions

A 45-year-old female who immigrated to the U.S. for less than two years—English is her second language, and she needs extra time to read and write English phrases. As you can see, adding a disability to our personas makes it easier for us to think about accessibility for UX projects. In the following sections, you will learn about different models of disability and the social impact it has on us as designers. Disabilities can develop from birth, aging or accidental or health-related incidents. On average, people who are 70 years old or older will spend eight years as individuals with disabilities.

The Medical Model of Disability: The Person as the Cause For Disability

Designing for inclusivity means striving to have a positive impact, both on your primary audience and beyond. Especially if your designs will live online, you may not have control over who sees them. When pursuing inclusive design, it’s critical to take into account the one-of-a-kind nature of humanity.

If you want your team to take an inclusive design approach, you need to embed inclusivity into the design principles that guide your efforts. Let’s consider some examples to give you an idea of what these principles might look like. Often, when talking about inclusive design, the first (and sometimes only) association that people/organizations make is with accessibility.

In that infographic, I’d like to include an illustration of a person to help visualize the data I’ve gathered. I could probably select a “generic” person silhouette, like the one above. So in this article, I’ll explain what inclusive design is, why it matters and how you can incorporate it into your next design project. More and more companies are becoming aware of the importance of inclusivity. Not just in hiring or in HR policies, but in every facet of their operations, including the designed materials they produce.

Digital interfaces that prioritize inclusive design can positively impact the user experience by fostering a sense of belonging. WCAG 2.0 has an amazing set of design principles, guidelines and techniques. It is created for UX and web designers, content creators, and developers.

To begin, you won’t need to repaint the metal as the precut sheets are forged in a variety of permanent colors (if you choose to go with metal siding though). Also, you won’t need to replace a shingled roof or vinyl/timber siding when it’s dinged or broken in a storm. Generally, a metal building home will save you money in regular maintenance costs compared to the expenses that a traditional stick-built home brings. If a barndominium kit or erecting one from scratch by yourself isn’t something you’d want to go for, then using a general contractor in your area still remains a go-to option.

Alternatively, as a two-story home, there is sufficient space for five bedrooms and large living quarters with an attached three-car garage. Barndominiums or “barndos” are one of the newest, cost-effective, custom home options for home buyers today. If you are considering building a barndominium, you should do your homework to see if they’re right for you. Fortunately, everything you want to know about barndominiums has been gathered for you here in this 101 guide.

A prefab metal structure is quite versatile and as such, it has become popular for a vast array of additional residential uses besides just a home building. Here are a few examples of other ways you can utilize a prefab home on your property. Additionally, metal avoids much of the routine maintenance that you might expect in traditional homes. No rotting, significantly less fire hazard, and the metal framing keeps burrowing pests and insects out of your home. Not only does this save you time on routine maintenance, but it also saves you money.

For instance, clearing the land, complexity of the design, weather and building permits will all affect building time. As a result, if all goes well, the time it takes to build a traditional home averages from 10 to 16 months. In comparison, the average build time for a barndominium, from start to finish, is 4 to 6 months. The reason being is, that barndo metal shells and steel frames are premade and thus it can be quickly erected on a concrete slab.

The material palette set forth by fala atelier (see more here) dissolves the traditional boundaries of a house. Vast surfaces of glass bricks, tiles, and light blue are occasionally interrupted by dots of marble, lines of wood, and blatant red elements. ‘One could refer to Ito’s sense of erotic transparency and Hasegawa’s experiments with overlays and layers. The domestic space is a stage and dwelling becomes performing; the user becomes an actor and spectator to the routines of daily life,’ concludes the practice. Metal buildings in Northern California are essential, especially when you consider the diverse weather situations this area experiences. From heavy snow loads to coastal threats, there is much to be focused on when you decide to build in this area.

The Canadian House Hippo: A Look Back at the Iconic Ad Resources

house hippo

The House Hippo commercials were created using a technique called forced perspective, which is a visual illusion that makes objects appear larger or smaller than they actually are. The technique was used in classic films like "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit," and it was also used in the House Hippo commercials. Now I plan to show my students the youtube clip, observe their reactions, and teach them how to spell hippopotamus. Then, prompt some further classroom discussion about the video and it’s authenticity.

Canadians think oddly shaped potato looks like the legendary "house hippo"

It is a priority for CBC to create products that are accessible to all in Canada including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. So those who are California dreamin’ might land in this sunny, star-studded city for a fun place to settle down. Keep yourself and your belongings protected — contact Hippo for a home insurance quote today. People like to live green in the Golden State, as evidenced by the fact that Los Angeles is the number one market for solar panels in the United States.

For those of you who have seen or used the term “house hippo” online, do you know what you’re referencing?

"There's something about them that's cute. It's the idea of taking this giant, enormous creature and turning it into something really cute and small." "I think Malcolm [Roberts] said, 'How about a tiny animal that lives in your house?'" Dempsey told Freshdaily. "He had a young son at the time and thought it might be kind of magical."

How much is homeowners insurance in Los Angeles?

They’re cute, they steal your socks, they ride your robot vacuum… and they’re back to help us remember to not believe everything we see online. The house hippo who stole our hearts in a public service announcement in 1999 has come back to Break the Fake in a new campaign from MediaSmarts, Canada’s centre for digital and media literacy. The House Hippo also became a beloved icon of Canadian culture, with many people still fondly remembering the commercials today. The House Hippo has been referenced in popular culture, and it has even inspired fan art and merchandise. The House Hippo is a reminder of a simpler time in Canadian culture and a symbol of the power of creativity and responsible advertising. The House Hippo quickly became a beloved icon of Canadian culture, with many people still fondly remembering the commercials today.

In a world where fake news and misinformation are rampant, the House Hippo’s message is more important than ever. The House Hippo may have been a fictional creature, but its impact on Canadian culture and the advertising industry is very real. The original 1999 commercial was designed to teach children about fake news (because, much to everyone's chagrin, house hippos aren't actually a thing), but the adorable little pet has since taken on a life of its own. The House Hippo may have only appeared in a few commercials, but its impact on Canadian culture and the advertising industry is still felt today. The House Hippo set a new standard for responsible advertising to children, and it inspired other organizations to create similar campaigns.

Most recently, the house hippo was revived in a 2019 ad by Ontari0-based MediaSmarts that warns modern audiences about the dangers of misinformation on the internet. It's inspired t-shirts, the name of a band and even an urban dictionary page. With Canadians seeing the House Hippo as a nostalgic piece of Canadiana, the choice was made to use the hippo again to remind Canadians to question what they see not only on television but the internet. A new commercial was also created, mimicking the format and tone of the previous commercial from 1999. In May of 1999, a commercial would debut on Canadian television that against all odds, would become part of the Canadian consciousness. The commercial, which was produced by Concerned Children’s Advertisers, would bring introduce the idea of a House Hippo to Canadian culture.

Do you believe it’s real?

Misinformation is running rampant online, and with the advancements of AI, images and text can be faked. Today, the House Hippo may not be as prominent as it once was, but it still holds a special place in the hearts of Canadians. The House Hippo is a nostalgic reminder of a simpler time in Canadian culture and a symbol of the power of creativity and responsible advertising.

And like 1/5th of Canadians, I wasn’t born here, and missed a lot of the traditional Canadian upbringing. "It's playful and it's cute and magical. And I think it speaks to the children in all of us." But as technology has evolved since 1999, so too has the house hippo. "We found pockets of communities all over the country — from all kinds of different age groups as well, and different backgrounds — who were still reminiscing about the hippo," said MediaSmarts executive director Kathryn Ann Hill. The house hippo came back in 2019, thanks to MediaSmarts, and even recently showed up as the star of an April Fools’ Day joke along with the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Add on a high crime rate and location on a large fault line, home insurance premiums also tend to be slightly higher. As such, it can be a little more expensive to set up a home in LA and insure it. Los Angeles has been the mecca for those pursuing a career in acting, music or general glamour for decades.

"The hippo was just the funniest animal we could think of, and yet somehow the most plausible. A giraffe or moose just seemed too fake somehow." Well, it was a mash-up of Canadian wildlife commercials and a lightning bolt moment, according to Siobhan Dempsey, one of the writers behind the original PSA. Two teams, one from New Jersey, and one from Montreal met on a beautiful spring day in New Jersey in 1946 to open their baseball season...

The House Hippo also had a significant impact on the advertising industry. The commercials were praised for their creativity and effectiveness, and they won numerous awards, including a Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The House Hippo set a new standard for responsible advertising to children and inspired other organizations to create similar campaigns.

The House Hippo was created by the advertising agency, John St., for the Concerned Children’s Advertisers (CCA), a non-profit organization that aims to promote responsible advertising to children. The CCA wanted to create a campaign that would encourage children to be more critical of the advertising they saw on television and to understand that not everything they saw was real. In the late 1990s, a strange and adorable creature made its way into Canadian homes through a series of television commercials. The creature was the Canadian House Hippo, a tiny hippopotamus that lived in the walls and under the furniture of Canadian homes.

In Los Angeles, the age group of 25 to 44 years stands out with both the highest median income and the maximum share of households. This alignment suggests a financially stable demographic, indicating an established community with stable careers and higher incomes.

If multiple people in your household are voting by mail, don’t put more than one ballot into the return envelope. Although a one-income-stream economic theory simplifies modeling, it does not necessarily reflect reality. Most economic models do not equate households and traditional families, and there is not always a one-to-one relationship between households and families.

In cases of multiple sclerosis, for instance, the body’s immune system attacks the insulation created by oligodendrocytes. Users on social media reflected that the dramatic scenes resembled a portent for some apocalyptic event, though it was unclear whether the horses' being caught would ward off such a scenario. And another ambulance crew treated a horse-related injury at a busy junction not far from St. Paul's Cathedral, it said. In total, three riders were injured and taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the army.

The surreal image of saddled horses bolting through one of the largest cities in the world prompted Brits on social media to joke — perhaps nervously — that it may be a portent for some terrible looming event. The hashtag #Apocalypse briefly trended on X in the famously sardonic United Kingdom. “A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention,” the army said in a statement after the horses were finally contained. The incident happened on Wednesday morning as the horses took part in what the army called "routine exercise" in the Belgravia area.

In autopsies, they found exposure to quats had “caused a selective loss of oligodendrocytes” in the brain, Tesar said. Officials said some of the horses had been injured, although it was not clear what caused the large patch of blood that appeared to be splashed across the chest and front legs of one of them. The BBC sent a reporter to Limehouse, an area in the east of the city where at least some of the animals were retrieved, where they photographed a large patch of blood and horse manure on the sidewalk.

We could not fulfill our mission as a not-for-profit without the valuable support from our many partners and partners. Building a sustainable, inclusive future by connecting people to the Ford Family Legacy and to each other through history, culture, and love. George Historic Motorcars in Pennsylvania volunteered to fix up a Model T Touring Car (not the one Ford used on his trip) so it could motor the 150 to 250 miles a day, as the original journey did. Ultimately, 4,000 were produced during the fair’s run from March 2 to Dec. 4.

About American Heritage

Involved in many worthy causes, and also collectors of art, they did a lot of giving back. Ever since I was young, and set foot in Greenfield Village for the first time, I’ve found historic places to be fascinating with stories they have to tell. I love how this has passed down to my girls, and for decades, Ford House, home of Edsel and Eleanor Ford has been a place on my “to visit” list. During your visit to Ford House, experience an extraordinary meal with a beautiful view of Lake St. Clair! The lakeside restaurant is located inside the Ford House Visitor Center.

The Architect for Ford House: Home of Edsel and Eleanor Ford

The body was again fabricated at the aircraft division per Gregorie’s design for a two-passenger roadster, with a vee’d grille; a tapered, boattail rear end; and cut-down doors. The hand-formed aluminum panels were mounted to a tube framework. Again, the sources say the cycle-style front fenders that turn with the wheels were modified from Ford Trimotor parts. The finished car weighed only 2400 pounds, so the stock 75-horsepower Model 40 flathead V-8 still gave it sprightly acceleration with a three-speed manual transmission and a floor shifter.

Restoration

When he wasn’t driving it in Palm Beach, like his ’32 Speedster he stored it at Gaukler Point, nowhere near his father’s stomping grounds in Dearborn. Sources say it was kept in an unheated “shed,” but the estate has a carriage house bigger than most people’s entire homes. Either way, a deep freeze in the winter of 1939–40 cracked the engine block, so a then-new 1940 Mercury V-8 was swapped in. A later owner would replace that engine with a NOS 1940 Ford V-8, with dual carburetors and dual exhausts. The Mercury engine, although removed, remained with the Speedster. To be able to significantly lower the car, he flipped the rear frame’s kick-up upside down, so the frame rails passed below the back axle, allowing for a six-inch drop.

Group Tours at Ford House

There was actually a third sports car that Bob Gregorie developed with Edsel Ford, the 1935 Special Sports. Unlike the two speedsters, this was a four-seater actually intended for limited production. Ford and Gregorie wanted to make a longer and lower version of the stock Ford passenger car chassis to sell to coachbuilders who would make custom bodies for it. Despite the fact that he liked it, Edsel and Gregorie discussed making an even lower and racier speedster. Gregorie started work on the new car and Edsel sold the ’32 Speedster to a Grosse Pointe neighbor named Elmer Benzin, who then sold it to a GM designer, who crashed it.

Several rooms, you would have thought were remodeled, due to the style of furniture and decor. Looking like something out of the 1960’s, the recreation room, and the bedrooms belonging to the boys, are filled with streamlined furniture. This shows how they were way before their time in setting trends, and being creative. Therefore, several details stand out based on the time period.

They were nationally prominent and they owned more than one house, but Southeast Michigan was their home. Here they built their final residence along the shores of Lake St. Clair, at a place known locally as Gaukler Pointe. Their impressive yet unpretentious home is where they raised and nurtured their four children - Henry II, Benson, Josephine and William - in a safe and loving environment. Warner considered doing a full restoration back to the original grille design, but in the end decided the speedster was a piece of history. Instead he and his team rebuilt the engine, replacing the aftermarket Edelbrok heads that had likely been installed when the car was in Hollywood with stock units, and then touched up the paint. Coming in spring 2020, Ford House will open a brand new visitor center and administration building, currently under construction.

History of the Estate

The result is visually arresting, if not quite as elegant as the first iteration. Gregorie made a scale model, and its photo, with Edsel Ford’s handwritten approval, still exists. By the mid 1920s, due to the success of the Model T, the Fords were one of the wealthiest families on Earth. Edsel and Eleanor furnished it with authentic fittings imported from the Cotswolds in the U.K. The project is to reduce the impact of waves and flooding, reduce polluted runoff and nutrient loads and increase recreational fishing opportunities. It also is to increase public access to the inaccessible shoreline for future educational and recreational activities, according to a Ford House release.

Offering a one-of-a-kind look into the private lives of Edsel Ford, his wife Eleanor and their children, a guided tour of their 60-room lakeside mansion brings you into the same rooms they called home. The Fords’ carefully designed and curated home also reveals their deep love for art and design, from architecture and landscape to their impressive personal collection of art and antiques. The house was designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn and completed in 1929. Kahn designed a gracious sixty-room house resembling a Cotswold village. The exterior was fashioned in Briarhill sandstone from Ohio; the interior was paneled and plastered in the seventeenth-century English manner. Construction took three years—from 1926 to 1929—and no detail was overlooked.

Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts were a gift of Edsel Ford. The Ford House grounds are a work of art in their own right. Designed by famed landscape architect Jens Jensen, the meadow, rockwork and water components appear to be almost completely natural but were meticulously planned. The most recent restoration project was to replace the sandstone pillars on the outside of the lakefront patio, which had started to crack around the upper edges. To ensure complete historical accuracy the foundation contracted a firm from the same region from where the original stone was purchased. The restoration projects are done by skilled craftsmen who have had proven previous experience in their fields.

After a year’s delay due to the pandemic, the Ford House, Edsel and Eleanor’s estate, has opened up its comprehensive visitors center, where the three cars are now in a permanent exhibit titled Driven by Design. Though the Ford House has owned all three vehicles for some time, for the most part they have been on loan to other institutions and car shows. As mentioned, Edsel Ford had a close working relationship with Gregorie, and Edsel liked to spend time in the styling studio offering suggestions and approving designs. Their relationship went beyond work on production Fords and Lincolns (Henry having bought Lincoln out of Henry Leland’s bankruptcy, it has been said, to give Edsel something to play with).

There are still many rooms where visitors are not permitted, including the basement. While the estate houses 60-plus rooms as well as other buildings, the public tours usually only showcase 20 of them. Occasionally the other rooms, such as staff living quarters, are showcased in specific tours. Though a number of rooms in the north upstairs wing of the house hold administrative offices, these are not shown to the public. Some of the rooms are still in less than desirable condition, and restoration projects hope to have the entire estate in show-worthy condition within the next few years. Both Edsel and Eleanor lived at the home until their deaths, in 1943 and 1976, respectively.

The bottom of the radiator grille was vee’d forward, presaging the grille on the 1933 Ford, as did the Speedster’s slanted hood louvers and suicide doors. Anticipating, or perhaps inspiring, “shaved” hot rods, Edsel’s ’32 Speedster has no exterior door handles. The windshield was raked and pointed, predating trends that would appear later in California customs.

Edsel and Eleanor Ford House

The Fords were cultural, social, and economic leaders in an era of great optimism, as well as a turbulent time of economic depression and world war. They were nationally prominent, and they owned more than one house, but Southeast Michigan was their home. Here, they built their final residence along the shores of Lake St. Clair at a place known locally as Gaukler Pointe. Their impressive yet unpretentious home is where they raised and nurtured their four children - Henry II, Benson, Josephine, and William - in a safe and loving environment. It reflects their love of family as well as their mutual passion for art and quality design. When the Fords commissioned Kahn to design their house, they traveled with him to England for inspiration and ideas.

Letters to the Editor: Slow, electrified cars that don’t kill anyone? Autopia should be everywhere

Of course, there was a time when both the 1932 and ’34 Edsel Ford Speedsters were also thought to be lost to history. Thankfully they have not, and you can see them together with the ’39 Continental prototype. The Ford House and its new Visitor Center are open Sundays from 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m.

“Bob” Gregorie, the first head of styling for Ford Motor Company, to render his ideas—Edsel Ford was no novice at the visual arts. He himself drew and took painting classes his entire life, and Edsel and his wife, Eleanor, were informed patrons of the arts. Edsel underwrote the creation of the renowned Detroit Industry murals that Diego Rivera painted in the great hall of the Detroit Institute of Art, and Eleanor donated and funded that museum’s multi-million dollar collection of African art. Consequently, the landscaping has a deceptive openness that keeps the house from view until the visitor is nearly upon it. Jensen also remade some of the actual contours of the landscape, dredging a nearby cove and building up a sandbar into a wildlife sanctuary. Like ponds in a manicured meadow, his irregularly shaped 132-foot-long swimming pool drained into a lagoon and then into the lake beyond.

Opening 2020, will be a new visitor center, including a restaurant. Edsel passed at the young age of 49, and Eleanor remained in the home until she passed in 1976. Because all the children were successful, and had mansions of their own, the Ford House became a legacy they would leave behind. You will find the butterfly garden up by the guard house, which is the main entrance. Also where you check in, choose your tour, find the restrooms, and explore the gift shop. For her 7th birthday, Josephine received this Tudor style play house from her grandmother, Clara Ford.

Early Edsels also suffered from poor quality, and Ford executive Robert McNamara -- later appointed secretary of Defense by President Kennedy -- was opposed to the car and worked to kill it. For example, the shifting buttons, mounted in the center of the steering wheel, reportedly caused some drivers to shift gears when all they wanted to do was honk the horn. Among collectors, “it’s certainly right up there with the classic American cars,” said Terry Lobzun, a spokesman for RM Auctions Inc.

Ford House is a 501c3 nonprofit and a National Historic Landmark. Experience the historic family home of Edsel Ford, the only son of Henry Ford, and his wife, Eleanor. Now a National Historic Landmark, visitors from all over the world come to wander, wonder, and explore the beauty of this 1928 National Historic Landmark and uncover a unique piece of the American automotive story in metro Detroit.

A different intricate pattern adorned each of the ten plaster ceilings, and the gabled roof was covered with limestone tiles—period and new—laid by English workers imported for the purpose. These artisans knew how to make a proper Cotswold roof, laying smaller and smaller tiles as they ascended toward the peak. (To this day English workers are brought in to make repairs.) The same craftsmen installed the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century paneling and other architectural details culled by the Fords from old English manors.

The battered flag first hoisted at the South Pole is displayed along with a note of thanks to Ford from Admiral Byrd for underwriting the expedition and developing the plane that made it possible. After Edsel died in 1943 at the age of forty-nine, his widow gave orders that the fire never be lit again. The house has undergone multiple large scale restoration projects, including new roofing which was conducted by a firm from England using five professional masons. The roof was torn down to the base wood all of which was replaced where needed. The stone was selected to match the existing stone from the same quarry as the original. Eleanor and Edsel Ford designed their estate at Gaukler Pointe to reflect their public roles and private values – grand and gracious, a stately mansion inspired by cozy cottages.

The front axle was moved forward 10 inches, and a combination of stock and custom suspension and steering parts were used to lower and extend the front end. Gombos started a painstaking five-year restoration using period photographs to reproduce custom parts that had gone missing over the years. Mike and Jim Barillaro from Knoxville, Tennessee, hand-crafted new aluminum fenders,  and the car was painted in 1932 Ford Tunis Gray—based on untouched paint that Gombos found on the underside of the cowl vent. A period-correct ’36 flathead Ford flathead V-8, with a Stromberg 81 two-barrel carburetor, was sourced to power the Speedster.

Karr said the Ford House plans to keep the public informed on the progress of the project through educational programs for children and adults. Discover the inspiration of Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, where picturesque architecture surrounded by beautiful landscapes takes you inside the story one of America’s most prominent automotive families. Edsel Ford – the only son of Henry and Clara Ford – became president of Ford Motor Company in 1919 at the age of 25. Explore the house and grounds on one of our regular and seasonal guided tours.

If you’re a fan of architecture, you can find all, of the over 400 designs, in and around Detroit. I learned a lot about Kahn’s contribution to the Detroit area. Albert Kahn, considered the world’s foremost industrial architect,  was most known for his design of American automobile factories. Although he was considered the “father of modern factory design” there is no shortage of his contribution to the city of Detroit, and the surrounding areas. I took lots of notes during our tour, and Ford House graciously shared even more facts with me, so I’m in no way short of information I can share with you.

The couple met at a dance, and enjoyed hosting elaborate parties in the grand room. They even had a pirate themed party for their son, which included at pirate ship! If only the walls could talk, there would be many stories to tell. Henry II, Benson, Josephine, and William took after their parents, and grandparents, by embracing a love of philanthropy.

Members of the Historic Vehicle Assn. set off Saturday to re-create the 3,500-mile drive that then-21-year-old Edsel Ford made from Detroit to San Francisco’s international expo in 1915. Edsel died at age 49 of stomach cancer and was survived by Eleanor and their four children. The only child of Clara and Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, Edsel was born in 1893 — the same year his father made his first gasoline engine. From riding in his father’s experimental Quadricycle as a toddler to driving on his own by age 12, Edsel grew up with the automobile industry.

Edsel, Henry Ford’s only son, nearly bankrupted the family carmaking business in the 1950s, but the company was rebuilt by Josephine’s oldest brother, Henry Ford II, who was chief executive from 1945 until his retirement in 1979. Edsel Ford gave the third speedster to Gregorie, who drove it for a few years before selling it to a friend on Long Island. A 1952 photo shows it on a used car lot in Burbank, California. It had been modified, with a LaSalle grille, a padded “Carson” top, and a two-tone color scheme. How seriously Edsel considered producing it is open to speculation as he still feared his father’s wrath based on what happened to that Model T prototype.

However, the overall space is larger and the exterior wall is nearly entirely windows, with a glass door leading out to your balcony. The balconies feature two deck chairs, a small table and glass railings so you can see the ocean from nearly every angle. Expect a small bar area and entertainment center, with extra floor space around the sitting area.

Enjoy delicious pasta made with the freshest ingredients inside our rustic and chic Italian eatery, La Cucina. No matter what you choose, our specialty dining options feature the tastes you’ll crave. Plus, our Main Dining Rooms offer a menu that changes daily, Chef's Signature Dishes and carefully selected wine recommendations, guaranteeing a different culinary adventure with every visit. A Sail Away Mini-Suite stateroom guarantees a Mini-Suite stateroom or better! Please note that the view from your balcony may be fully obstructed or partially obstructed.

Quite possibly the most surprising rooms on the NCL Sun are the interior cabins. For passengers who like interior staterooms but are concerned about the (usually) smaller size, this may be a perfect option. There are mini suites that offer about 100 more square feet than what you’ll find in a balcony stateroom. The mini suites do offer their own balconies, sleeping space for four and larger bathrooms with tubs (which might come in handy for traveling families).

For an experience nearest to what you’ll find on a modern, newer cruise ship, you’ll want to book a balcony stateroom. These staterooms offer the same decor choices, with the off-white walls, and blue and gray color palette. In the interior staterooms, expect a modest sleeping area and bathroom, plus a small sitting area and TV. While the walls are still a bit dated with an off-white hue and wood paneling, the more modern blue and gray tones found throughout the bedding, seating area and artwork give the spaces an upgrade. Think a similar experience to what you might find in a new, budget hotel.

Engage in Norwegian Cruise Line's onboard activities, including water parks, casinos, dance clubs, arcades, ropes courses, sports courts, duty-free shops and more. Known as The Emerald City, Seattle is a beautiful, luscious city with incredible views of the Cascade Mountains and Elliott Bay. The city is full of activities for both water lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

On the Sun, the space is a bit smaller and in a fully enclosed room with multiple grilles. It’s exactly as expected in all ways including food quality and experience. But be sure to wear clothes that you don’t plan on using again on your vacation! You leave smelling like the whole restaurant and it’s impossible to get it out of your clothes. The design and layout of these staterooms make them feel substantially larger than most other balcony cabins on other ships.

There were plenty of chairs on multiple decks overlooking the pool and rarely was there a problem getting a good poolside spot. The entertainment on the Norwegian Sun is probably the biggest weakness of the ship. Passengers who book their cruise around a strong entertainment lineup will likely be disappointed.
